Manchester City host Girona this weekend as they step up their preparations ahead of the 2022/23 season recommencing.

The Premier League champions return to competitive action next Thursday when they face Liverpool in the Carabao Cup and, while several top-flight sides have been preparing for the restart with multiple friendly matches, the clash with Girona is City’s only winter warm-up game.

The Spanish side, who are 13th in La Liga, are part of the City Football Group and therefore a sister club of the Blues. Indeed, Yan Couto and Yangel Herrera are currently on loan from City at Girona, while Premier League supporters will also recognise Oriol Romeu and Paulo Gazzaniga, both of whom play for the Catalan club.

The friendly is taking place at the Academy Stadium, which is part of the Etihad Campus and located across the bridge from the team’s regular home ground. The match kicks off at 1pm UK time.

Man City team news

The City players who did not travel to the World Cup are expected to play on Saturday, which includes: Stefan Ortega Moreno, Scott Carson, Rico Lewis, Sergio Gomez, Cole Palmer, Riyad Mahrez and Erling Haaland.

They were the only first-team squad members who travelled to Abu Dhabi for the club’s warm-weather training camp, with Josh Wilson-Esbrand missing out due to injury. The rest of the squad was made up of youth-team players, many of whom could supplement the senior team again for Saturday’s friendly.

Of City’s World Cup participants, only Kevin De Bruyne and Ilkay Gundogan – who crashed out in the group stages in Qatar – are expected to play any part at the Academy Stadium this weekend. Twelve City stars were eliminated at the last-16 and quarter-final stages of the World Cup and are due to meet up with the squad next week.
